Antique maps of North America begin in 1492 with Columbus?s landing in the Caribbean islands. While the landing of Vikings around 1,000 are well documented, others such as the Irish or Chinese lay claim to discovery prior to Columbus. Old antique maps of North America show the slow exploration of the continent over many centuries. The Spanish, English, Dutch, Portuguese and French all have rich mapmaking and cartographic legacies both maritime and continental. Spain?s new World dominions were mainly to the south in Mexico and the Caribbean. The English and French staked their claims to the North in what is now the United States and Canada. Cabot, Champlain, Hudson and Cortez are but a few of the names that made their mark in mapmaking of the North American continent. |
