The State of New York, Compiled from the most Authentic Information, 1796 by Samuel Lewis. Image size 15 3/8" X 18 1/4", sheet size 16 1/4" X 19 7/8". This map appeared in William Winterbotham's Atlas published by John Reid in New York. Being that this is a second state it adheres closely to its predecessor of 1795. Peekskill is still "Peck's kill" and "three trees" are found marking the western most part of Connecticut. This map adds a division of townships in eastern Genesee County. Also shown is the "Military Tract" which was land purchased from the Iroquois Confederacy to make overdue payment to revolutionary war veterans. Most of the Adirondack Mountains wait to be explored. The map is in very good condition for its age. There is a very clean 1" tear in the lower centerfold which is not noticable when map is laid. Paper is slightly age toned. This is an important piece of early New York history in the time between the revolution and the War of 1812. A fine item for framing in home or office.
