Antique maps printed from the years 1866 to present are found in this category. This post United States Civil War era ushered in a period of rapid expansion in the American mapmaking business. Many states, counties and towns where put into atlas form for the first time in great detail. Authors such as Beers, Walling, Gray, Lake, Ellis and many others produced state and county atlases. The county and township antique maps often contained landowner?s names and were sponsored by local elite and businesses. In consideration for their sponsorship many fine antique engravings and prints were made of the wealthy both of their person, homesteads and businesses. The old vintage maps came to be known as cadastral, plat or landowner maps. These historic maps are fine items for collection of personal, family and civic history. They also make for rare and unique antique map gift opportunities. |
